Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Restoration Project: Preserving a National Treasure

A Comprehensive Restoration Project to Safeguard the Historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for Future Generations

An Icon of the Outer Banks

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, designed and constructed between 1868 and 1870, stands as the tallest traditional lighthouse in the United States. This iconic symbol of North Carolina’s Outer Banks was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998. Threatened by coastal erosion, the lighthouse and its associated buildings were moved 2,900 feet inland to a new site in 1999.

A Vital Restoration Effort

Situated on a barrier island along the Atlantic coast, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is exposed to salt air, high winds, and intense sunlight, necessitating regular maintenance. The National Park Service has received funding for a significant restoration project to address the findings from the 2014 Comprehensive Condition Assessment Report and the 2016 Historic Structure Report. This 18-month project, undertaken by Stone & Lime Historic Restoration Services, Inc., includes extensive restoration work both inside and outside the lighthouse, as well as improvements to the landscape for a better visitor experience.

Restoration Highlights

Fresnel Lens Replica: The current spotlight will be replaced with a replica of a first-order Fresnel lens, including a fabricated pedestal, working clockwork, and a replica counter-weight system. Visitors will be able to see the workings of the pedestal at the top of the lighthouse during climbs.

Repainting: New paint will be applied to both the exterior and interior of the lighthouse after removing the existing paint.

Ironwork Restoration: The intricate ironwork of the lighthouse, particularly in the lantern room, on the watch deck, in the window structures, and on the stairs, has suffered from salt air exposure over the past 150 years. The restoration will repair the iron where possible and recast it accurately where necessary. The historic iron fence surrounding the lighthouse will also be restored.

Restoring Missing Features: Ornamental structures above the windows (pediments) and the historic iron fence will be restored, enhancing the lighthouse’s historical authenticity.

Landscape Enhancements: To improve pedestrian flow, viewsheds, and historical interpretation, the project will expand walkways and restore defining fences around the keepers’ quarters. The Keepers’ Stones will be relocated for better interpretation and enjoyment.
