Hatteras Island Surf Challenge: A Community Celebration of Surf Fishing
September 27–29, 2024 | Hosted by Fisherman’s Post
As we move into fall, Hatteras Island comes alive with excitement for one of the most anticipated events of the season—the Hatteras Island Surf Challenge. This three-day tournament from September 27-29 offers anglers a chance to showcase their skills, compete for impressive cash prizes, and most importantly, join in a community tradition that celebrates the rich fishing culture of the Outer Banks.
A Premier Event for Fishing Enthusiasts
Whether you’re an experienced angler or a newcomer looking to join in on the action, the Hatteras Island Surf Challenge is an event that welcomes everyone. The tournament features four divisions—bluefish, black drum, sea mullet, and pompano—with over $8,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. A single $75 entry fee (if registered by September 16) gives participants a shot at winning in all four divisions. Additionally, anglers can opt-in to the Slot Red Drum TWT for just $25 for an extra chance to reel in big money with the top three heaviest red drum.
Surf Fishing at Its Best
What makes this event truly special is its focus on surf fishing—no boats, no piers, just anglers and the vast shoreline of Hatteras Island. The tournament spans from Rodanthe down to Hatteras Village, allowing participants to fish along some of the most pristine beaches on the East Coast.
With five convenient weigh-in stations located at popular tackle shops across the island—Hatteras Jack (Rodanthe), Frank & Fran’s (Avon), Hatteras Style Custom Rods (Buxton), Frisco Rod & Gun (Frisco), and Teach’s Lair (Hatteras Village)—anglers can easily check their catches. The Tournament Headquarters is located at the Camp Hatteras Conference Center in Rodanthe, where registration and Sunday’s awards dinner will take place.
More Than Just a Tournament
While the fishing is competitive, the Hatteras Island Surf Challenge is also about bringing people together. The tournament fosters a sense of camaraderie among participants, families, and volunteers, all united by their love for the island and its fishing heritage. Junior, Senior, and Lady anglers are also celebrated with special prizes, making it a family-friendly event that encourages anglers of all ages to get involved.
The event closes with an Awards Dinner on Sunday, featuring a complimentary meal provided by Hatteras Island Meals, a local nonprofit dedicated to serving nutritious meals to those in need. What’s even more heartwarming is that all proceeds from the sale of tournament fish will be donated to support this incredible organization.
Supporting the Local Community
The Hatteras Island Surf Challenge goes beyond competition—it’s a community event that gives back. Proceeds and fish donations will benefit Hatteras Island Meals, ensuring that residents who are unable to prepare meals for themselves receive the care they need.
Sponsors and local businesses are a key part of making the event a success, so be sure to thank the organizations that help keep this tradition alive.
Join the Fun!
For those looking to participate, make sure to register by September 16 for the early-bird entry fee. Registration will be held on Friday, September 27 at the Camp Hatteras Conference Center, where participants will pick up their wristbands and prepare for a weekend of non-stop fishing action. And don’t forget, Sunday will feature a raffle with prizes including a factory-custom Century surf rod.
Whether you’re here to fish or just to enjoy the community spirit, the Hatteras Island Surf Challenge is a must-attend event this fall. We at Trisha Midgett and Team encourage everyone to come out, experience the excitement, and enjoy all that Hatteras Island has to offer.
Mark your calendars, and we’ll see you on the sand!
