Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich maritime history of the Outer Banks as the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site and Museum opens its doors for the 2024 season on March 18th. This early start to the season offers visitors a rare opportunity to delve into the captivating stories and heritage of this iconic landmark, which typically welcomes guests from late spring until late fall.

From March 18th onwards, the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station invites you to explore its hallowed halls Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wander through the corridors of the main 1911 station and uncover the tales of heroism and bravery that define the legacy of the United States Life-Saving Service.

Exciting Updates

While most of the site will be open for exploration, please note that there may be occasional closures of the 1874 station due to ongoing renovations. These renovations are part of an extensive effort to preserve and celebrate the station’s history in anticipation of the upcoming 150th anniversary celebration slated for October 2024. Additionally, repairs to the 1907 Midgett House further enhance the visitor experience, providing insight into the lives of those who dedicated themselves to maritime rescue operations.

Experience the Shipwreck Rescue Reenactment

One of the highlights of the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station’s summer program is the Shipwreck Rescue Reenactment, returning for the 2024 season starting May 28th. Join us every Thursday to witness this captivating demonstration of a traditional beach apparatus drill, a spectacle that has delighted visitors for decades. Notably, their team of dedicated volunteers showcased their talents on a national stage at the annual U.S. Life-Saving Service Heritage Association Conference in Maine, reaffirming Chicamacomico’s status as a beacon of maritime history and preservation.

As Chicamacomico gears up for the momentous 150th anniversary celebration in October 2024, stay tuned for more updates and announcements throughout the season.
