Saturday, July 19th – 8am to 1pm at Jennette’s Pier

Founded in 2010 by two local parents and advocates, Surfing for Autism is a one-of-a-kind event held each summer on the Outer Banks. The idea was simple but powerful: give children with autism the chance to experience the thrill of surfing in a safe, welcoming environment—free of cost to families.
What started with 30 participants and a handful of volunteers has grown into a major annual event, drawing hundreds of families, surfers, teachers, and therapists to Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head. Each participant is paired with two experienced surfers and a trained therapist or teacher to provide support both in and out of the water.
This year’s event takes place on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 8 AM to 1 PM. While the focus is on the surf, the experience offers so much more: meaningful connection, pure joy, and a sense of inclusion that extends to siblings and family members as well.
Surfing for Autism is about more than just catching waves. For many families, it’s the first time their child has been part of an event without judgment or barriers. The ocean offers a calming, empowering space that builds confidence and connection—both for the participants and the volunteers. It’s a reminder that joy, growth, and community can happen when we meet each other where we are.
