2026 OBX Polar Plunge at Jennette’s Pier
Every winter, our Outer Banks community comes together for one of the coolest (literally!) and most meaningful events of the season — the OBX Polar Plunge benefiting Special Olympics North Carolina. Whether you’re a year-round local or visiting the beach in the off-season, this is one event that truly captures the heart of the Outer Banks.
Event Details
- Location: Jennette’s Pier, Nags Head
- Date: February 28, 2026
- Time: Registration begins late morning, followed by the opening ceremony and the plunge shortly after
- What to Expect: Participants dash into the chilly Atlantic Ocean to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics athletes across North Carolina.
You don’t have to be fearless to participate — some people run straight in, others just wade their way through. However you do it, the goal is the same: have fun and support an incredible cause.
What Makes the OBX Polar Plunge So Special?
- Supporting Special Olympics athletes: Funds raised help provide year-round sports training, competition, and leadership opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
- Team spirit and creativity: Friends, families, businesses, and organizations often form teams, many dressing up in costumes and cheering each other on.
- True community vibes: This event is about more than cold water — it’s about coming together, encouraging one another, and showing up for something bigger than ourselves.
Ways to Get Involved
There are plenty of ways to participate, even if jumping into the ocean isn’t your thing:
- Become a plunger and raise funds for the cause
- Donate to a team or individual participant
- Volunteer or cheer from the beach and help create an unforgettable experience for everyone involved
No matter how you take part, every dollar raised and every cheer from the shoreline helps make a real difference.
Why Events Like This Matter
Community events like the OBX Polar Plunge remind us what makes the Outer Banks so special — a strong sense of togetherness, generosity, and a willingness to show up for our neighbors, even when the water is freezing. It’s a powerful way to kick off the year and support athletes who inspire us with their determination and joy.
So grab a costume, rally your friends, or come out to cheer — and help make the 2026 OBX Polar Plunge one to remember!
