Turkey Trots on the Outer Banks, A Great Thanksgiving Tradition

Coastal 5Ks bringing locals and visitors together to move, give back, and kick off the holiday with gratitude

If you’ll be spending Thanksgiving on the Outer Banks, there’s no better way to kick off the day than with a little movement, a lot of community spirit, and some well-earned pumpkin pie waiting at the finish line. From Duck to Nags Head to Hatteras Village, there are three festive 5Ks happening this year — each with its own local flavor and a great cause behind it.

Surfin’ Turkey 5K — Hatteras Village

When: Thanksgiving Day, November 27 at 8:00 a.m.
Where: Hatteras Village Civic Center
Details & Registration: hatterasyouth.com/surfin-turkey-5k

The Surfin’ Turkey 5K is a beloved Hatteras Island tradition hosted by the Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund, supporting enrichment programs for local students. The course winds through the village streets with beautiful coastal views and a laid-back island vibe. There’s also a “Puppy Drum” fun run for kids 12 and under, making it a true family event.

Runners can pick up packets Wednesday afternoon or race morning, and it all wraps up early enough to get home in time for turkey and pie. Register early to guarantee your shirt — proceeds stay right here on Hatteras Island.

Duck Turkey Trot 5K — Duck, NC

When: Thanksgiving Day, November 27 at 9:00 a.m.
Where: Starts near Scarborough Faire, Duck
Details & Registration: runsignup.com/Race/NC/DUCK/DUCKNCTURKEYTROT5K

Up north, the Duck Turkey Trot brings families, visitors, and locals together for a scenic 5K through one of the most charming towns on the Outer Banks. Hosted by the First Flight Track Club, proceeds support youth running programs in Dare County.

Participants enjoy a T-shirt, swag bag, hot coffee or cocoa, snacks, and even a post-race beer ticket for those 21 and up. There’s also a raffle and after-party at Treehouse Café & Coffee — plus, the top finishers take home homemade pies!

Spots tend to fill up quickly, so sign up early if you want in on this Thanksgiving morning favorite.

The OBX Gobbler 5K & Fun Run — Nags Head

When: Thanksgiving Day, November 27 at 8:00 a.m.
Where: The Village at Nags Head (Milepost 14)
Details & Registration: runsignup.com/Race/NC/NagsHead/TheOBXGobbler5KFunRun

If you’re spending the holiday in the central Outer Banks, the OBX Gobbler 5K is the perfect option. The race starts and finishes in The Village at Nags Head, with a fast, flat course that’s great for runners, walkers, and families alike.

Proceeds benefit Outer Banks Running Club programs and local charities. Participants get a T-shirt, festive photo ops, and plenty of post-race cheer. This one draws a big crowd — think turkey hats, tutus, and a whole lot of Thanksgiving spirit!

A Morning to Be Thankful For

Whether you’re trotting through Duck, Nags Head, or Hatteras Village, each race captures what makes the Outer Banks so special — the people, the views, and the community connection. It’s a reminder that Thanksgiving is about more than just the meal; it’s about moving your body, supporting your neighbors, and celebrating the place we love to call home.

So lace up, bundle up, and join the fun this Thanksgiving morning. No matter where you run, you’ll start the day with a full heart (and maybe a few extra calories to spend on dessert!).
